Parks Commission August Meeting

The Parks Commission met Wednesday morning to follow up on a variety of old business.

Park Events

The commission voted to recommend the Chagrin Documentary Film Festival request to use Triangle Park as in past years.

Geese in Riverside Park

…are still a problem. Rob says the village is looking into services to deal with them.

Ohio Historical Marker

We discussed again the possibility of a second Ohio Historical Marker (like the one by the popcorn shop) to be placed near the entrance to Riverside Park along the hardware store side. The topic would be New Deal projects in Chagrin Falls, like the wall on Grove Hill and the old Post Office. Anne will follow up with John at the Chagrin History Center to fill him in.

Playground Surface

Rob shared that the village is working with the installer to replace a section of the poured-in-place rubber surface that didn’t come out correctly. The rest of the playground will remain open during this process.

Ohio NatureWorks Grants

Aleksa (from the village engineering firm) let us know that they would be pursuing two grants – one to replace a failing retaining wall and the old brick path near the sycamore tree and one to build a pavilion on the eastern edge of the park.

Grove Hill Park

Construction on the interior of Grove Hill Park began earlier this month. The village Streets & Service Department created a loop path that connects in two places to the existing walkway leading up from the stairs. Three stone benches are placed at various points along the path, and in the center of the park is a small clearing that will feature natural wood stumps and log climbers.

The village is preparing an RFP to install the remaining landscaping (trees, shrubs, grasses, etc.), which is planned to happen later this fall and next spring.

River Run Park Playground

This playground is in poor condition, and I let them know that Council is aware of the need for a replacement.

Founders Field

The Service Department recently cleared some dead and dying trees from the western border of the park, along the access road. Work will continue this year to clean up the drainage ditch and replace the gravel driveway apron with concrete.

Miscellaneous

Rob gave a quick update on the bridge construction project. I asked if the village could locate the stone veneer sample wall (that the county created during the design phase) and put it on public display somewhere. I’ve seen a lot of misinformation online saying that the finished bridge will be plain concrete, or concrete cast to look like stone.

The next Parks Commission meeting will be September 4 at 8:30 am.
